Graduate Hotel

Evanston, IL

Nestled near Northwestern University’s campus and the shores of Lake Michigan, Graduate Evanston captures the timeless charm and rich character of its historic surroundings. Originally opened in 1927 as The Homestead, the 119-key hotel was reimagined by Graduate Hotels in collaboration with DMAC, serving as architect of record. The renovation preserves the property’s classic spirit while introducing the functionality, comfort, and accessibility expected of a contemporary hotel experience.

With a deep connection to Evanston, DMAC brought a local perspective rooted in the city’s history and architectural fabric. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the building offered an opportunity to honor its legacy while thoughtfully modernizing its interiors. Working closely with Graduate Hotels’ in-house design team, DMAC enhanced circulation and accessibility across public spaces, guestrooms, and corridors, transforming former apartment kitchens into spacious guestrooms and updating others to meet ADA standards.

Throughout the property, all mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and life-safety systems were replaced and integrated seamlessly within the existing structure. The result is a carefully restored 8,800-square-foot landmark that maintains its historic integrity while supporting modern hospitality needs.

The redesigned hotel reflects a balance between preservation and innovation—a renewed gathering place that celebrates Evanston’s cultural identity and continues the story of a neighborhood icon.
