URBAN DESIGN
300 S Riverside Plaza
Chicago, IL

As Chicago advances its celebrated Riverwalk to transform Downtown, this proposal envisions the next chapter through a human-centric, architecturally inspired solution to modern infrastructure needs. Building on the Riverwalk’s success, the design reimagines the site as a dynamic transit hub and public space. It introduces accessible urban greenspace and waterscape, shifting the focus from the street to the riverfront.
Responding to Amtrak’s need for an emergency stairwell that would have overshadowed and concealed the ADA access to 300 South Riverside Plaza—a 23-story, cutting-edge Class A office tower—DMAC’s concept seamlessly integrates the egress stair while offering a master plan for an extension of the Riverwalk through 300 SRP’s reimagined entry plaza. By layering public space to connect natural landscapes, commercial development, and intermodal transportation, it fosters a new framework for social interaction and experiences in the transitional spaces.
